L’Oréal for the Future

Orea-future

L’Oréal has just released details of its  new “L’Oréal for the Future” program, which embodies two complementary dimensions of what corporate responsibility means to the company: transforming its approach towards an increasingly sustainable business model, while contributing to solving the challenges facing the world.

As the brand launches the next phase of its sustainability journey, it is committing to taking on greater responsibility by engaging in the planet’s entire ecosystem and demonstrating that companies can be part of the solution to the environmental challenges that the world is currently facing. In doing so, L’Oréal is demonstrating that the growth of a business can work hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility to protect and preserve the beauty of the planet.

Into the Future – From Today to 2030

Respecting Planetary Boundaries

L’Oréal’s overall commitment is to ensure that its activities are respectful of the so-called “Planetary Boundaries”, meaning what the planet can withstand, as defined by environmental science (see diagram below). In order to reconcile its needs with the preservation of a resource-limited planet, L’Oréal’s new commitments will not just focus on its direct impact, but will also tackle related indirect, extended impact, for example, the activity of its suppliers and the use of its products by consumers, reducing their carbon emissions by up to 25%. The growth of a business can work hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility to protect and preserve the beauty of the planet.

Solving Urgent Environment Challenges

L’Oréal is allocating 100 million euros to impact investing dedicated to the regeneration of ecosystems through biodiversity restoration and the development of the circular economy, plus 50 million euros to a charitable endowment fund to support highly vulnerable women. The group believes that in order to build a sustainable and inclusive world, it must provide practical support those who are struggling socially or economically, at the same time as focusing  on preventing climate change and the erosion of biodiversity.

Case Study: Garnier

Garnier one of the the L’Oréal group’s most advanced in terms of sustainable development, piloting its "green beauty" concept with the objective of rolling it out across all the other brands in the group. Adrien Koskas Global Brand President, Garnier has focused on 3 main pillars in achieving Garnier’s success in the field of sustainability:

Zero Virgin Plastic

Garnier is currently using just 15-20% virgin plastic and the plan is to use no more that 50% by 2020  and the ambition is to use no virgin plastic at all in packaging by 2025 at the very latest.

Labelling System

An innovation in the cosmetics industry, Garnier is using labelling which displays the environmental impact of products, including water consumption and carbon footprint.

Product Innovation

Compact shampoo and care product, plus packaging-free alternatives to reduce environmental impact.

The details of the “L’Oréal for the Future” commitment were released to the world’s press through a an international digital briefings on 26 June 2020 presented by  Jean-Paul Agon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of L’Oréal  and Alexandra Palt, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer and Executive Vice-President of the Fondation L’Oréal: It’s a great day for L’Oréal – I feel that by having presented our program for the future, we have reached an important milestone in our history,” commented  Jean-Paul Agon. “This is the beginning of a new phase in an ongoing revolution to make L’Oréal a true pioneer in the field of sustainability and corporate environmental responsibility. I feel very excited about our future – it’s almost like going on a journey of exploration into new dimensions, for me and all our 88,000 employees.”
