Color Zoom celebrates its tenth birthday
This year’s Olympic city enjoyed three days of Color Zoom 2012 when London played host to the event which attracted 2,500 hairstylists from 40 countries, all eager to applaud the overall international winner of the competition, which is now in its tenth year.
The programme was intense. Saturday kicked off with the national finals complete with live performances at the Excel Exhibition Centre. Here, the audience cheered on 72 finalists from 30 countries. The hairdressers themselves had three hours to create their looks onstage, before being submitted to expert inspection by the judges (including Phil Smith and Lisa Shepherd).
But Sunday was the day everyone was waiting for. To the soundtrack of Love takes over, performed by Jessica Mears, the finals of the contest began at the ICC Excel Exhibition Hall. A catwalk show of Color Zoom trends from the past was also staged, to celebrate the tenth birthday of the event. This show featured Newstalgia (2008) by Mark Leeson, British Hairdresser of the Year, as well as Industrial Soul (2007), Rockmantic (2008), Virtualist (2009) and Play Strong (2011) by Shane Bennett, 3-times Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year, among others.
The event also saw the launch of Beautify, the new 2013 trend. This was presented by heavyweights of the industry, Beverly C and Rita Marcon, who explained the concept as visualised by the International Color Zoom Creative Team – vividly colourful and rich in inspiration from current social/cultural trends. The International Color Zoom Creative Team of 2013 comprises the Master Team (Agnes Westerman from the Netherlands and Aussie Shane Henning) and the 2011 Global Color Zoom winners (Lisa Whiteman from the UK, Demi-Leigh Gardiner from Australia and Ben Lin from Taiwan).
The show wound up with an avant-garde interpretation of the Beautify trend by Michael Barnes. This was closely followed by the eagerly-awaited announcement of the contest winners. Cory Couts, worldwide president of Goldwell & KMS California, took to the stage to present the 2012 awards:
- Partner Colorist - Hagen Krüger, Germany
- Creative Colorist - Chief Lin, Taiwan
- New Talent Colorist - Eason Chen, Taiwan
These winners will now be admitted into the 2014 International Color Zoom Creative Team, to help create the next trend collection.
With a highly informative Look and Learn seminar, Monday was dedicated to the launch of the Beautify trend collection. Lisa Whiteman and the International Color Zoom Creative Team created eight looks focusing on the Beautify concept – creating a better world thanks to a more positive and creative view of the world. The team, introduced by William Wilson (technical and creative director of Goldwell), gave an indepth explanation of the cut’n’colour techniques used for each look.
And so, goodbye to Color Zoom until 2013. In Los Angeles!
